IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY SPORTS COMMITTEE

BURLINGTON, KY

As Approved by the IHM Board of Education

Mission Statement:

It is the purpose of the IHM Sports Committee to provide extra-curricular

programs that will enhance the overall development of our children by promoting

physical fitness and the positive characteristics of sportsmanship, and to

complement the intellectual, spiritual, and academic goals of Immaculate Heart

of Mary School. Our programs are strictly for the enjoyment of the children

involved, not for the glory of spectators and coaches. All adults are expected to

act in a manner that will be instructive, not destructive to the learning and

maturing process of our children.

Procedures for Communication

It is the intent of the Sports Committee to encourage a spirit of cooperation

among coaches, athletes, and their parents. It is further encouraged that all

parties keep open the lines of communication that will enhance all aspects of our

athletic programs, and our children’s participation in them. Thus, coaches,

parents, and athletes need to be familiar with the philosophical perspectives of

our sports programs, and the specific guidelines that govern each sport. When

there is some question about any procedure, parents are encouraged to contact

coaches directly to discuss issues involved. Likewise, if a parent’s behavior or

reactions at games are inappropriate, coaches are encouraged to remind parents

of their responsibilities. If however, these communications do not lead to an

agreed upon resolution to the question involved, either party may contact any

member of the Sports Committee for a clarification. If necessary, the matter will

be discussed by the entire committee, in which case the principal with the advice

of the committee will make a decision. This decision will be final.

2007 - 2008 IHM Basketball Policy

Grades 3 - 8 General Policy

1. ELIGIBILITY

Players must be officially registered, pay the applicable registration fee and be

actively attending IHM School as a student in good standing to be eligible to play

for a school-based basketball team.

Registrations will be accepted up to the deadline assigned by the director and

the Sports Committee. Any registration received after the deadline will only be

accepted if there is room available on a team as determined by the director and

the Sports Committee. Also, if the late registration is accepted there will be a

late fee assessed equal to 50% of the normal registration fee. If the director

solicits additional players after the registration deadline to fill specific teams, the

late fee will be waived for those registrations only.

2. PRIORITY

Students who choose to play for IHM School basketball teams are expected to

make that affiliation their first priority even though they are free to play on

additional teams or participate in additional activities outside the IHM program.

3. CLASSIFICATION

Grades 3 and 4 Recreational teams only.

Grade 5 Recreational teams with the option of a Competitive team for each

grade and gender.

Grades 6, 7 and 8 Competitive teams with the option of Recreational teams

for each grade and gender.

4. COACHES

It is the role of the Sports Committee to designate coaches for every IHM

basketball team. The sports committee will use its best efforts to select qualified

non-parent coaches for competitive teams. Parents may coach competitive

teams only if qualified non-parent coaches are not found. Parents are permitted

to coach recreational teams. A permanent coach in place for a competitive team

will have the right of first refusal each season to coach that same grade again.

5. TRYOUTS

Positions for the competitive teams will be determined by holding tryouts. In

most cases, tryouts will be led by sports committee personnel, with players

evaluated by qualified coaches as designated by the committee. The head coach

will have the ability to help decide which player(s) will be selected to play on the

competitive team unless they have a child who is participating in the tryout.

Under those circumstances, the coach may not be involved in the selection

process. The Basketball Director and Sports Committee shall have the sole

discretion to determine the number of players that will be selected for the

competitive team.

6. MINIMUM PLAY TIME

Each IHM recreational basketball team will have minimum playing time

requirements equal to one full quarter per game. Specific details are included in

grade descriptions. The coach has the right to reduce or eliminate playing time

for athletes who miss games/practices or who are disruptive to the team.

Communication among coach, athlete and parent is important especially if

playing time criteria is in question.

ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION

IN EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Any student of Immaculate Heart of Mary School in grades 6 through 8 who

wishes to participate in extra-curricular activities sponsored by Immaculate Heart

of Mary School or Parish must maintain an acceptable academic standing in order

to be eligible for those programs.

The Leaders of the extra-curricular activities will submit rosters for these

activities to the school as soon as they are formed. The process will be triggered

by the distribution of a progress report to students. Ineligibility may result in

one of three ways:

1) Any student that receives a detention may attend practice and MUST

attend the next scheduled game but will not be permitted to

participate in the game, and must sit on the bench. If a player that

has received a detention does not attend the game and sit on the

bench for any reason including illness, then they will sit out the next

scheduled game. THE PLAYER MUST ATTEND THE GAME AND

MUST SIT ON THE BENCH.

2) The Coaches will be notified of detentions on the Tuesday that the

detention is being served by the Sports Committee or its designee. The

suspension time frame is for the next scheduled game following the

Tuesday of the detention.

3) Any student that receives a suspension may attend practice and MUST

attend all the scheduled game(s) for one (1) week, but will not be

permitted to participate in the game(s), and must sit on the bench. If

a player that has received a suspension does not attend any game(s)

and sit on the bench for any reason including illness, then they will sit

out the next scheduled game(s). THE PLAYER MUST ATTEND THE

GAME(S) AND MUST SIT ON THE BENCH.

4) The Coaches will be notified of suspensions on the Tuesday that the

suspension is being served by the Sports Committee or its designee.

The suspension time frame for ineligibility is from the Tuesday of the

suspension to the following Monday regardless of the number of

games benched.

5) Any suspension given as a result of the accumulation of three

detentions shall not be disciplined as described in Section 3 above.

6) Any Student who fails to have a cumulative grade point average of

2.00 GPA will be ineligible for participation in sponsored activities for a

minimum of a 2-week suspension. This means the Student is to

participate in practice, MUST attend all games and sit on the bench.

The student’s academic progress will be reviewed at the end of the 2-

week period. The student will receive an Academic Suspension Card at

time of the Suspension. It will be up to the student to go to each of

his/her teacher(s), have the teacher(s) to sign the card saying that the

student is passing as this time. Then the card is to be given to the

Sports Committee or it designee. The Sports Committee or it designee

will then contact the coach and inform Him/Her whether the Student is

eligible or ineligible to play.

Subjects to be included are Reading, Language, Spelling, Mathematics, Religion,

Technology, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Art, and Music.

It is the sole responsibility of the administration of Immaculate Heart of Mary

School to provide a list of those students who are ineligible to the Sports

Committee by 12:00 p.m. each Monday. The Sports Committee and coaches are

not responsible in the event that a detention, suspension or academic suspension

is not communicated to Committee by the deadline. The Sports Committee will

not rule a student ineligible unless/until it receives written notice from the

administration of Immaculate Heart of Mary School.
