IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY SPORTS COMMITTEE
BURLINGTON, KY
As Approved by the IHM Board of Education
Mission Statement:
It is the purpose of the IHM Sports Committee to provide extra-curricular
programs that will enhance the overall development of our children by promoting
physical fitness and the positive characteristics of sportsmanship, and to
complement the intellectual, spiritual, and academic goals of Immaculate Heart
of Mary School. Our programs are strictly for the enjoyment of the children
involved, not for the glory of spectators and coaches. All adults are expected to
act in a manner that will be instructive, not destructive to the learning and
maturing process of our children.
Procedures for Communication
It is the intent of the Sports Committee to encourage a spirit of cooperation
among coaches, athletes, and their parents. It is further encouraged that all
parties keep open the lines of communication that will enhance all aspects of our
athletic programs, and our children’s participation in them. Thus, coaches,
parents, and athletes need to be familiar with the philosophical perspectives of
our sports programs, and the specific guidelines that govern each sport. When
there is some question about any procedure, parents are encouraged to contact
coaches directly to discuss issues involved. Likewise, if a parent’s behavior or
reactions at games are inappropriate, coaches are encouraged to remind parents
of their responsibilities. If however, these communications do not lead to an
agreed upon resolution to the question involved, either party may contact any
member of the Sports Committee for a clarification. If necessary, the matter will
be discussed by the entire committee, in which case the principal with the advice
of the committee will make a decision. This decision will be final.

2007 - 2008 IHM Basketball Policy
Grades 3 - 8 General Policy
1. ELIGIBILITY
Players must be officially registered, pay the applicable registration fee and be
actively attending IHM School as a student in good standing to be eligible to play
for a school-based basketball team.
Registrations will be accepted up to the deadline assigned by the director and
the Sports Committee. Any registration received after the deadline will only be
accepted if there is room available on a team as determined by the director and
the Sports Committee. Also, if the late registration is accepted there will be a
late fee assessed equal to 50% of the normal registration fee. If the director
solicits additional players after the registration deadline to fill specific teams, the
late fee will be waived for those registrations only.
2. PRIORITY
Students who choose to play for IHM School basketball teams are expected to
make that affiliation their first priority even though they are free to play on
additional teams or participate in additional activities outside the IHM program.
3. CLASSIFICATION
Grades 3 and 4
Recreational teams only.Grade 5
Recreational teams with the option of a Competitive team for eachgrade and gender
.Grades 6, 7 and 8
Competitive teams with the option of Recreational teamsfor each grade and gender.
4. COACHES
It is the role of the Sports Committee to designate coaches for every IHM
basketball team. The sports committee will use its best efforts to select qualified
non-parent coaches for competitive teams. Parents may coach competitive
teams only if qualified non-parent coaches are not found. Parents are permitted
to coach recreational teams. A permanent coach in place for a competitive team
will have the right of first refusal each season to coach that same grade again.
5. TRYOUTS
Positions for the competitive teams will be determined by holding tryouts. In
most cases, tryouts will be led by sports committee personnel, with players
evaluated by qualified coaches as designated by the committee. The head coach
will have the ability to help decide which player(s) will be selected to play on the
competitive team unless they have a child who is participating in the tryout.
Under those circumstances, the coach may not be involved in the selection
process. The Basketball Director and Sports Committee shall have the sole
discretion to determine the number of players that will be selected for the
competitive team.
6. MINIMUM PLAY TIME
Each IHM recreational basketball team will have minimum playing time
requirements equal to one full quarter per game. Specific details are included in
grade descriptions. The coach has the right to reduce or eliminate playing time
for athletes who miss games/practices or who are disruptive to the team.
Communication among coach, athlete and parent is important especially if
playing time criteria is in question.

2007 - 2008 IHM Basketball Policy
Grades 3, 4, 5
Teams from these grades are classified as “Recreational” or Instructional Play.
Recreational teams are formed based upon the number of eligible players who sign up and the availability of league play.
If League availability is not sufficient to accommodate the number of players who signed up, it may be necessary to hold tryouts to determine which students will be eligible to participate. While we will do our absolute best to accommodate everyone who signs up to play prior to the registration deadline, there is no guarantee that all students who signed up will be afforded the opportunity to play. Under these conditions, the basic rules specified for tryouts and selections process will be applied to here as well.
The intent is to field at least one recreational team per grade per gender. If there is more than one recreational team per grade, teams will be split to divide the talent as equally as possible.
If an insufficient number of players register to field a team for a particular grade, in the sole discretion of the Basketball Director, late sign-ups may be accepted or additional players may be sought from lower grades in IHM School. All players interested in playing up under these circumstances must have the opportunity to try out for the open spots on the team. The sports committee and/or designated head coach will have the ability to decide which player(s) will be selected to play up unless they have a child who is participating in the tryout. If selected to play up, these students become a permanent member of the team while retaining their eligibility to play for their existing grade as well.
Parents are permitted to coach recreational teams and teams are permitted to keep the children of the head coach and up to two assistants.
Competitive teams may be formed in addition to recreational teams. In general, the sports committee will try to field a competitive team in addition to recreational teams in grade 5. Under no circumstances will players who register after the sign-up deadline be eligible for Competitive teams.
All players assigned to a recreational team for that grade will have the option of trying out for the competitive team if they are interested in doing so. The decision to try out for the competitive team is totally voluntary at this point.
In the 5th Grade players who are selected to play for the competitive team are expected to honor their commitment to play for the recreational team.
Minium playing time is one full quarter per game.
Minimum playing time applies to all games; including league and tournament play.
Minimum playing time applies to all recreational teams and the 5th Grade competitive teams.
Attempts should be made by the coach to give each child additional playing time if possible.
The coach has the right to reduce or eliminate playing time for players who miss games, practices, who are disruptive to the team, and or disrespectful to the coach or team. The coach will discuss with parents.

Grades 6, 7 & 8
Classified as “Competitive” Play in these grades.
The intent is to field one competitive team per grade per gender. This team will be commonly referred to as the “A” team. Once again, we will field one “A” team for each grade, for each gender.
All students who signed up to play prior to the registration deadline are eligible to try out for the competitive team “A” team for their respective class and gender.
Positions for the competitive team will be determined by holding mandatory tryouts.
All players who attend the try out for the competitive “A” team will be notified whether or not they were selected to play for the team.
Players who make the “A” team for their respective grade & gender will not be allowed to play for any other team within this program.
If there are sufficient numbers of students who do not wish to play on the competitive “A” team or do not make the competitive “A” team, every attempt will be made to form a second “B” team for those students. This is subject to league availability. These “B” teams will be classified as recreational teams. Under this scenario, it may be necessary to combine 7th and 8th grade players in order to field a team at the “B” level. Subject to league availability, we will attempt to form a third “C” team if we have sufficient numbers to do so.
In the event that additional leagues are not available to accommodate the number of players who do not make the “A” team, tryouts may be necessary to determine which students will play for the “B” team. While we will do our best to accommodate everyone who signs up to play, there is no guarantee that all players who do not make the “A” team for their respective grade or gender will be afforded the opportunity to play. It is all subject to the availability of leagues in which to participate.
Tryouts will not be necessary if the number of players interested in playing is equal to or less than the number needed to field a team.
Each IHM basketball team at this level will have no minimum playing time. At this grade level, teams may play in 2 leagues.
The coach has the right to reduce or eliminate playing time for players who miss games, practices, who are disruptive to the team, and or disrespectful to the coach or team. The coach will discuss such issues with the parents of the player.
