Exceptionalities - Kathy Nienaber
My name is Mrs. Katherine Derks Nienaber and I am responsible for the students in the IHM Exceptionalities Program; students with special learning needs and students who have been identified Gifted and Talented. I am also the Director of the IHM After-School Resource Program, a program designed to assist and support students with organization, study skills and homework support. This is my first year as the Academic Team coach. I have been teaching at IHM since 1995 beginning as the Kindergarten teacher. After thirteen years, I began teaching students in Exceptionalities and that is where I have been for the last two years. I am in my sixteenth year of teaching at IHM.
I grew up in Erlanger, Kentucky and my family, including my parents, graduated from St. Henry. I graduated in 1987. My grandmothers graduated from Notre Dame Academy in the 1920’s. I have been married for twenty years and my husband Todd, is a Covington Catholic grad as well as his dad before him. We have three children; Jake, a Senior at Covington Catholic, Olivia, a Junior at Notre Dame Academy and Audrey, a 6th grader at St. Agnes Elementary which is our home parish. My children are 4th generation Catholic School educated!
In 1992, I graduated from NKU with a BA in Elementary Education. I received my MA in Elementary Education and IECE (Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education, Special Education) in 2005. I chose education as my major because I wanted to study something that would help me become a good mom and as I began teaching I realized that I had answered a call to a vocation. Being a Catholic Educator is fulfilling personally, professionally and spiritually. I am blessed to be able to live and work my Catholic faith.
